Can you see what's wrong?

Kinja'd!!!

So here's the back end of a lovely Ferrari P4, but something is amiss. Can you figure out what the issue is?

Also, I woke up 2 hours early to show up for a meeting that apparently was not being held. So fuck.

Kinja'd!!!

Edit: Trick question! All of you noticed the two coils were disconnected, but didn't notice that the P4 is missing another twelve spark plug leads - this one is a replica. A real P4 has 24 leads and all four coils hooked up. This was recently pointed out by Jim Glickenhaus in his P4/5 Competizione Facebook feed, because !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Two of the coils are not connected?

Kinja'd!!!

Obvious Answer: The issue is that it's not in my garage.

Not so obvious Answer: These are not connected.

You're on the right track but it's a bit more than that.

But why aren't they connected? I mean it doesn't look like there are any other leads laying around.

I'm gunna go with the controversial answer and say these two are connected.

those are spare coils? there are 2 dizzys on there, so they could take one each. I dont see the hot lead or ground connected to the one that is located one in from the right. Now go get crackin on some NSFW, I didn't get any action last night :)

Rightmost coil feeds the right dizzy and the second coil from right is feeding the left dizzy.

Me thinks those two coils could be extras, but there's something else amiss... Is this an actual P4? The gearbox doesn't seem to match other pictures I've seen.

That was dirty. You explicitly said it was a P4 and then you proceed to say it's a replica.

A P4 can't be a replica... A replica of a P4 is a replica, with another model name or some shit

But it is a P4. OR IS IT!?

Surprisingly it's cheaper to literally make a new P4 and race it than racing an actual P4.

Kinja'd!!!0

Heh, I thought something was off in there. The P4 had a full support for a spare tire over the gearbox, and that one doesn't seem to leave much room for one. I didn't notice the lacking leads though... So, the P4 had two plugs per cylinder? I didn't know that.

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > BlazinAce - Doctor of Internal Combustion

Kinja'd!!!1

Yep. Two plugs per cylinder. A lot of older engines used the twin plugs, and Chrysler still does this on some HEMI engines.

Kinja'd!!!1

Probably because it's a replica. I may be wrong on this (and I probably am), but I remember him talking about the actual P4 one day, and he pointed that the P4 was peculiar because the engine needed a higher current than usual to fire all 24 leads (almost double, or something). And they fire at a different timing. So, probably that's the reason it needs 4 and the replica needs 2.

And Alfa also had the Twin Spark, I guess that's the one I know the most about because I once entertained the idea of a twin spark head on my Fiat.

I was going to suggest Roy Wort's dick, since that's like the automotive equivalent of a supermodel bending over in a mini-skirt without any underwear on.

That may have been more humorous in my brain...

Kinja'd!!! Hermann > BlazinAce - Doctor of Internal Combustion

Kinja'd!!!1

Yep. 24 plugs. They had different timings to get a better combustion. That's why it needed 4 coils, the current was too much to handle the 24 plus and different timing.

Glickenhaus even said the current was so high it needs a 3000rpm idle or the battery won't charge.

Twice the electronics to fail on the Sedicivalvole! Sounds fine to me! (sorry, can't hold my Fiat jokes to myself)

I'm assuming you mean it is missing a couple coil wires, but I think that is by design so that if one fails during a race the driver can get going again after swapping a few wires while on course.

Very true, my wiring has already been having some trouble dealing with only 4 plugs lately, imagine having to handle 8. I'll have to check my wiring once I'm done with classes, I haven't noticed any syptoms yet, but better safe than sorry, amirite?

I'm sure they just wanted to be extra careful so that the car wouldn't catch fire. I mean, whoever heard of a Ferrari going up in flames? That just doesn't happen.

That's quite a statement when Ferrari's road cars burn more often than their race cars.

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > Turbineguy: Nom de Zoom

Kinja'd!!!0

O_o

I was referencing the road cars. The F430 had hydraulic hoses that, when presented with engine bay temperatures over time, would fracture and spill flammable hydraulic fluid onto the exhaust. The 458 Italia had a flammable epoxy/mastic used in the engine compartment on the wheel arches that would catch fire. Both were dealt with via recalls.

Kinja'd!!!0

I'm with ya here. My point was that race cars operate in a more dangerous environment while road cars live in garages. The idea that Ferrari's 430/458 seem to burn more often than their race cars is quite unexpected.

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > Turbineguy: Nom de Zoom
11/27/2013 at 10:02

Kinja'd!!!0

Not really - race cars have fire suppression systems and are pretty much stripped of interior bits. I can totally see a road car going up in flames more than a race car, considering race cars must pass a technical and safety inspection prior to the race and road cars only have state inspections. Also, race cars are probably ran a fraction of the time that road cars see pavement. It makes sense to me.
